Florence Ann Speed was the fourth child of Jacob Speed & Isabella Hall (nee Tones) born October 15th, 1880 at Hetton-le-Hole, Co Durham.
Florence Ann & her parents were living at Easington Lane, Hetton-le-Hole in 1881 where her father was an innkeeper. Isabella had a brother & a sister as well as 2 older step-sisters & a step-brother.
Florence’s father died in 1890 & in 1891 she was living with her widowed mother at the Commercial Inn, Front St, Hetton-le-Hole where Isabella was the innkeeper.
By 1901 the family had moved to the Shakespeare Inn, 5 North Terrace, Dawdon & Florence & her 2 sisters were assisting her mother who was the beer tavern keeper.
Florence married George Archer on August 15th, 1905 at Ryhope, Co Durham. George was born November 18th, 1878 at Ryhope, the son of Margaret & William Archer, a blacksmith.
In 1911 Florence & George were living at 25 Ryhope St, Ryhope Colliery, Sunderland where George was a colliery blacksmith. They had 2 sons – George (2) & William (1). Also living with them were Florence’s widowed mother, Isabella Speed, & 19 year old niece Florence Forster. It was noted on the census that Florence had had 3 children by this time, one of whom had died.
At the time of the 1939 register Florence & George, a colliery blacksmith, were still living at 25 Ryhope St, Ryhope, Sunderland. Living with them were family Isabella, John R, a coal miner putter, & Stanley, a furniture shop assistant.
Son William married Vera Wilson Hunter in 1939 in Roker, Sunderland & at the time of the 1939 register they were living at Royle St, Sunderland & William was a coal hewer.
Daughter Isabel married James Rogers Frost in 1943 in Ryhope.
George died on February 8th, 1969 & was buried in Ryhope Cemetery, Sunderland.
Florence died in February 6th, 1975 & was buried in Ryhope Cemetery, Sunderland.
